Amazing
Hand on heart, this is truly the best book I've ever read. Beauman recreates the period in such a way that you'll feel you were actually there. Constance's devastating effect on one family has you loving and hating her at the same time, and I fell in love with Acland as well. One complaint: no book I've read since has lived up to this one. I miss the characters and places so much, it's as if I physically knew them. A truly great novel.

Magnificent and complex whodunnit
This is one of my favourite books, and I almost didn't pick it up as the title led me to think that it would be a ho-hum romance. How wrong I was!It is a complex and detailed murder story, with some of the best drawn characters I have ever read in a book. It is quite unusual in that for, perhaps the first quarter of the book, you are never really sure of the relationships between the characters who are told in rememberance by our narrator, and who is the god-daughter of the chief character Constance. This is not a criticism, it is an interesting plot device which allows us to really get to kno

A murder-mystery-romance you'll remember for a long time
Just finished it. Dreamt of Constance and Ackland. A love story to compare to Wuthering Heights. A murder or an accident? Sane or insane? Unrequited love or love fulfilled? I could never guess what came next. A must for a good read. Recommended by a work friend who got this book for a quarter. It's worth much more. I'll have to tell her it's out of print. An excellent author. I want to read her other works. A historical perspective that lays as a backdrop for a masterpiece painted on a canvas that spans years. People full of color, height, and depth. Passionate dreams, idealist aspirations, fu

Dark Angel
I've always thought Beauty and the Beast had a dark side to it. Dark Angel brings that side out and makes it the star of the show. Haunting and mysterious, Gerard and his island bring an aspect of the beast to life that I hadn't seen before. Catherine was a perfect Beauty, without being too innocent. The two are a perfect match for each other from the very beginning. The story begins with Catherine washing up on the shores of a strange and magical island where Gerard is the Master in all possible ways. Used to getting things how he wants and when he wants, Catherine's force of will is a r

Haunting and Beautiful
I loved this book so much I read it twice and will probably read it again. It's a haunting story about the tragic effects one woman has upon a family and weaves a little bit of a murder mystery in to add to the tension already existing in the relationships. Beautifully written, this one will stay with you long after you have finished reading. This definitely ranks among my favorite books of all time.

Well-done
This story takes place in a small Mormon community where the characters deal with a number of small-town issues. The story develops around a mysterious Civil War vet who rescues the storyteller and affects her family in a number of ways. The story is well-put together, the writing is excellent. The author's style and skill are refreshing without putting down the reader or bringing in foolish and unbelievable elements. The story is more than a simplistic formula western.
